How might we allow interior designers to upload images and videos into a visual curation app?

The Challenge

As a visual creative with a background in photography, I've always been drawn to designs that incorporate imagery and visual media. I decided to take on the challenge of designing a media library. Given that there is a variety of uses for a digital asset management system (DAM), I chose to focus on interior designers as my target user base.

During Summer 2024, I was the sole product designer responsible for the end-to-end design process from conception to final deliverables. My role included the following responsibilities: competitive analysis, wireframing, information architecture, prototyping, visual design, and usability testing.

Overview

Media Library

I designed for these key user tasks:

  • upload
  • export/download
  • save favorites
  • group into folders
  • bulk select
  • rename files
  • delete file
  • filter & sort functionality

Hi-fidelity Designs

Testing revealed that users were able to complete the upload experience successfully. It was really fulfilling to be able to bring my vision for a media library to life.

Future enhancements

My next steps would include designing and testing additional features such as:
  • notes
  • the ability to add a url for sourcing
  • the ability to organize media into folders upon upload
  • bulk select for folders

I would also look to partner with a development team to build the application.

Results, Reflections, & Next Steps

The media library will allow interior designers to add and organize their visual media so that they can easily access their curated images and resources for their projects.

User Feedback and Design Iteration

Goals

The goal of this project was to design an upload experience for a tool that enables interior designers to curate resources for their projects, whether they intend to use the product simply for inspiration, or for sourcing products.

Discovery

I conducted an audit of DAMs associated with products such as Meta, Google, and Wordpress in order to assess how I could differentiate my product.

I created a simple user flow for the upload experience, and created mobile and desktop wireframes to map out the screens.

The original plan was to have folders on the left in the desktop mockups (as shown in my wireframes), but after getting some feedback I realized that the more intuitive choice was to have have folders display in the grid by default. I updated the design to reflect this change.

I chose a warm color palette with neutral, organic colors to brand the application, as many of these colors are popular in the interior design world. This design decision based on market research will make the application feel more familiar and attractive to target users, increasing their trust in the business.
